African Adventures!

We have been learning all about Africa in Geography! We viewed photo's from my trip to Africa several years ago highlighting giraffes, hippos, gazelles, ostriches, lions, water buffalo and cheetas! We colored our own African Savannah for display, learned all about village life, had a fabulous time trying on congas, hats, and  jewelry from Kenya. We also enjoyed playing drums and other instruments to African music.

We have also been learning about the Sarah Jr. school in Nairobi and loved seeing pictures of the students in their one room school. Rice and beans is their staple diet and is most economical. Sometimes they get a bit of fruit or have cabbage with the rice. Their teacher, Miss Judy, has babies to care for as well as children to 5 years old. She and only one other teacher are responsible for all of the students. Miss Judy can only afford to hire one teacher. They are just beginning their new school year this month, with the number of students enrolled climbing as each week goes by. Right now she has 17 but by the end of the month she is likely to have double the students. It is summer right now in Africa, and quite hot! I took these photos in the winter,,,June and July.

Our collection of school supplies is AMAZING!
More about that in the next post!
