Fun in the Snow!

After reading "The Snowy Day", we sequenced all of the things that Peter did in the snow in the form of a puzzle. We then decided that it would be fun to re-create the story first hand by going out in our winter wonderland and doing just what Peter did ....make footprints, snow angels, and have a snowball fight! We thought of some other things to do as well. Take a look .........

Our class of "angels"!

Making snowmen was difficult with powdery snow!

Supplies for our African School!

Our class has collected an amazing amount of supplies for the Sarah Jr. School in Nairobi, Kenya!
Crayons, pencils, books, calculators, dice, toothbrushes, jump-ropes, balls, soft toys, matchbox cars, socks, rainbow loom bracelets, flash cards, learning games, and scissors are just some of the items that we are sending. So much was collected that we will have to send a second box at a later date. Our first job was to decide which items were the most important to send, and we packed the first box as a class activity. We learned all about size, weight, and money as we prepare the items and packed the box. We took many items out of their original packaging to save space and to cut down on weight. We weighed some of the items on a balance to see what weighed more and less. We took a trip down to the business office with Mrs. Pietrowski to weigh our parcel, with our target weight to be 20 pounds or less. We held our breath and ...the package weighed in at a little over 18 pounds! It is stuffed to the brim! I will send the box this weekend. Thank you so much for your support!!!

As our class continues to learn about Africa, we engage in more creative expression as Massai necklaces re-created! This project took much patience and careful painting. The results were impressive!

African Adventures!

We have been learning all about Africa in Geography! We viewed photo's from my trip to Africa several years ago highlighting giraffes, hippos, gazelles, ostriches, lions, water buffalo and cheetas! We colored our own African Savannah for display, learned all about village life, had a fabulous time trying on congas, hats, and  jewelry from Kenya. We also enjoyed playing drums and other instruments to African music.

We have also been learning about the Sarah Jr. school in Nairobi and loved seeing pictures of the students in their one room school. Rice and beans is their staple diet and is most economical. Sometimes they get a bit of fruit or have cabbage with the rice. Their teacher, Miss Judy, has babies to care for as well as children to 5 years old. She and only one other teacher are responsible for all of the students. Miss Judy can only afford to hire one teacher. They are just beginning their new school year this month, with the number of students enrolled climbing as each week goes by. Right now she has 17 but by the end of the month she is likely to have double the students. It is summer right now in Africa, and quite hot! I took these photos in the winter,,,June and July.

Our collection of school supplies is AMAZING!
More about that in the next post!
