What was it like to be a Pilgrim?

It has been exciting to learn about the Pilgrims. What was it like to be a Pilgrim girl or boy?
As we read about Sarah Morton, and Samuel Eaton, two Pilgrim children, we learned how difficult life was for families. We recited and acted out this poem, inserting new tasks the children had to do daily such as tend the fire, feed the chickens, milk the goats, reap the harvest, pound spices, etc.

Pilgrim children just like you,
had so many things to do
They served dinner, and helped out
without a whimper or a pout.
Then when all the work was done
Pilgrim children had time for fun.
They played marbles, shared secrets too.
Were tucked in bed, just like you.

We discovered first hand, a little about pilgrm life. We learned that the children had to stand and serve their parents at meal times. Many times there were not enough chairs for the family. They also were not allowed to speak unless spoken to. They draped their napkins over their shoulders and ate with spoons and knives...no forks! We had lunch and I was served by the children! I was the only one to sit....everyone stood for the entire lunch. We had real cloth napkins to put over our shoulders and at only with spoons and knives. Some of us were weary of standing but couldn't complain because they weren't allowed to speak unless I asked them a question!

Halloween Fun!

What is spooky on a dark night? We had fun reciting this interactive story with a pumpkin, cat, mouse, owl, scarecrow, and moon using our spooky voices and props! Going on a "spooky walk", right in our room was a popular activity as well. Ask your child to tell you what was spooky!
Thursday was exciting as we headed over to the middle school for our Halloween parade. We got to see the middle school students and teachers all dressed up and enjoyed showing off our costumes too!

There was spooky fun at the Middle School!

Making candy patterns in math class was a hit!

All About Safety and Firefighters!

Fire, fire! Do you know what to do in an emergency situation? We do! Learning about fire safety has been exciting! We know how and when to dial 911, how to "Stop, Drop, and Roll", how to safely exit our house if there is a fire, and four different types of fires. Trying on real firefighter turnout gear was one of our favorite activities.

We worked hard writing the name of each piece of safety equipment...

We took a safety walk in school, locating fire alarms, extinguishers, exit signs, etc., and graphed the results.

For Show and Share, we brought in all kinds of safety related items, from safety helmets, to wind up radios, to sports mouth guards and life vests!

Even Mr. Wareheim joined in the fun!!

Stay tuned for pumpkins and Halloween......
