Pot Luck Party a Hit!

What a fantastic way to wrap up our unit on nutrition! Our Pot Luck Party was a huge success. Plenty of eating and fun was had by all! We read the story "Pot Luck", where each child brought in a food that began with the first letter of their name to share. We did the same, trying to represent each of the five food groups that we have been studying. Before the Potluck, we tallied each food onto a pyramid, then transferred the information onto a graph of the five food groups. We had so much fun learning with our food characters Melba Toast, Ginger Gold, Celery Stalk, Chuck Steak, and Monterey Jack Cheese! Through Picky Pedro and his friends, we know all about the food pyramid, how many servings of each group we should eat, and that each group contains special nutrients to help our bodies grow, keeping us healthy and strong. Special songs completed the unit, keeping our minds focused on healthy eating. A special thanks to Sue Waters and Heidi Berman and Megan D'Andrea for their help with the party. We couldn't have done it without you!! Check out the fun below!

We wrote about our favorite cereals as well!

Happy eating!

Irvine Nature Center

Our trip to Irvine Nature Center was educational, fun, exciting, and packed with all kinds of activities. We hiked, explored the woods, looked under logs for salamanders and bugs, sniffed spicy tree sap, watched and listened for birds, and saw a real hawk and owl that had been rescued. Our guides gave us each a magnifying glass for closeup investigation. We played on a natural log playground, relaxed and stretched our muscles with yoga, made some magnificent bubbles outside, and played an active squirrels and trees game with our teachers. Our trip was the perfect link to our Spring unit in Science and Discovery Class.

The Hunt!!

Today was the big egg hunt and party! We decorated our bunny bags and prepared to collect the hidden eggs filled with goodies. Off to the Holmgren's backyard we trecked, ready for the hunt!
Thanks to our moms and dads for filling the eggs, providing a cool craft, (eggs that will "grow" hair!) and yummy cupcakes!
Happy Easter!

Picky Pedro and the Five Food Groups

Picky Pedro is a picky eater who doesn't like to try new foods. His wish is that he would never try new foods again.  He finds that he has a Fairy God Mother named Matilda who will grant his wish if he trys one new food each day for a week. Each night, Matilda brings Picky Pedro a new food to try from one food group at a time. He tries each new food and finds that he DOES like new foods. Our class is learning about each of the five food groups through Pedro's story. We are also trying one new food at lunch each day, just like Pedro. We don't always like everything, but are willing to at least give it a try. We are also building our own food pyramids, selecting healthy foods for each food group. We began with the grain group and met a new food character, Melba Toast. Our next food was from the vegetable group, Celery Stalk. We will continue to learn about nutrition and meet new characters through the next two weeks.
As we learned about the grain group, we brought in our favorite cereals and looked at sugar content, fiber, and artificial coloring, deciding which were healthy choices. Unfortunately, most were not the healthiest!
